Before Sunrise
Dir: Richard Linklater Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy This movie is something special. Sure...it is nothing more than a meet cute and two people walking around Vienna and talking...but it is so much more than that. This is an adult fantasy. As I watched this near-masterpiece, I found myself yearning and wishing that I too could experience the night these two wonderful characters did. They are smart, cynical, cheerful, playful, flirtatious, and just flat out interesting. I never wanted their discussions to end...because they were all interesting and natural. The climax is handled SO perfectly...I couldn't imagine a better way to end...as ambiguous as it is. I am not moving along to Before Sunset and Before Midnight...which all seems to be Richard Linklater's Boyhood before he made Boyhood. A- |

Dead Man
Dir: Jim Jarmusch Stars: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die This is a curious film. It felt like a Dante-esque spiral into the darkness and soulful preparation of oneself for death. It is a bit slow and I really despised the editing choices of constant fade-ins and outs...but I was also immersed in William Blake's journey. Jim Jarmusch has created a gorgeous fable here whose bursts of violence really have a huge impact. Quite different and almost stagey...but successful nonetheless. B- |
