Breakfast at Tiffany's
Dir: Blake Edwards Stars: Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die I don't see it. Again...Blake Edwards made a comedy that I don't find funny. I think a problem with this film is that everyone though that the beauty and charm of Hepburn was enough to carry the movie. She almost pulls it off...but it was just all so boring. The romance that sprouts from such a weirdly platonic relationship with a girl who is the shallowest of the shallow...just didn't work. There is no reason that this film should be as iconic as it is. Both Roman Holiday and Sabrina are FAR superior Hepburn vehicles. Don't even get me started by that HORRIFIC Mickey Rooney role. C |

The Hustler
Dir: Robert Rossen Stars: Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die What a wonderfully well-acted film, that even though it is about billiards, it is essentially a sports movie. Talented hotshot gets beaten, loses confidence, needs to be built up, has to decide what is most important in life, and so on and so on. Newman shows why he became a Hollywood legend and I was upset that Gleason didn't have more screentime...because he was magnetic. B+ |
La Jetee
Dir: Chris Marker 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die My problem with this short film is that I wouldn't really consider it a film at all. It is a slideshow with narration. Sure, its somber sci-fi story is what inspired Terry Gilliam to make 12 Monkeys...but if you can't comment on acting, directing, photography, or anything else....you can only comment on pictures. That isn't a movie...and it was a bit frustrating for me. The story? Neat enough....but there was no reason this short film couldn't have been filmed properly instead of just posting chronologically significant pictures. D |
