The Big Sleep
Dir: Howard Hawks Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Just like The Maltese Falcon, I love these film noir mysteries with Bogart. I have no idea what was actually going on in this film. It was something about a missing chauffer, blackmail, murders, gamblers, and something or other. Bogart is just an actor you can watch for hours and hours as he talks tough to the bad guys and suave to the women. He is quite a magnetic presence. I only give Falcon a better rating because that film had Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Otherwise...this is still a fun Private Eye film. B |

The Stranger
Dir: Orson Welles Stars: Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, Orson Welles 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die It is strange that soon after seeing the masterful Citizen Kane, I witness another Orson Welles film that pales so thoroughly in comparison. The story is pretty simple...where Welles plays a Nazi war criminal in hiding and Edward G. Robinson is the FBI man hell bent on discovering him. I even liked Welles' performance...but there is no "big scene", no elaborate direction or set design...and ultimately...nothing distinguishing. C |
