Dir: Aleksandr Dovzhenko 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Obviously conceived as a Ukranian Communism propaganda film about collective farming, but what Dovzhenko delivered was that plus quite a beautiful allegory about nature and the circle of life. Its odd and overacted, as most silent films are, but the direction, editing, and music make it frenetically exciting and moving. Never have I been so excited by a sequence of tilling fields and breaking bread. The editing makes it feel like a high-octane, modern action sequence. B+ |

Dir: Luis Bunuel 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Written by Bunuel and Salvador Dali, it is inevitable that this movie will be weird and beautiful. However, this story about star-crossed lovers is more concerned with that beauty and weirdness so we can't get an emotional connection to the main characters. Still an interesting example of Bunuel's odd approach to filmmaking. B- |
