Bonnie & Clyde
Dir: Arthur Penn Stars: Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die A lot of fugitive movies nowadays owe a lot to this film. Beatty and Dunaway are great, and the direction is top notch. For 1967, I was surprised by how subversive and unconventional it was. Natural Born Killers and The Devil's Rejects were obviously offspring of this film...and as I have read...this was a movie that opened the door to these kinds of ultra-violent fugitive tales. Very entertaining with turns by Gene Hackman and Gene Wilder. B+ |

The Graduate
Dir: Mike Nichols Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katherine Ross 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die It lives up to most of the hype...and I was surprised by how mistaken I was by the construct of the story. I always thought Dustin Hoffman was in a relationship and was seduced by his girlfriend's mother. I loved that it was flipped flopped and the affair was the problem leading into a fledgling romance with the daughter. Every second with Hoffman and Anne Bancroft is perfect. The film is meticulously directed. However...the daughter romance is very abrupt, rushed, and the second half of the film is hard to follow timeline wise. I never knew how much time passed and if it was as little as it seemed...its REALLY bad storytelling. I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt and accept it was just unclear. Fantastic classic...probably the one I have been the most embarrassed about never seeing. A- |

The Jungle Book
Dir: Wolfgang Reitherman 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Not the most magical of Disney movies, but certainly has its charming moments. I guess this film was just one of those animated movies that is something you either grew up with and consider one of the best, or you see it as an adult and just mildly appreciate it. That good ol' BARE NECESSITIES is a catchy tune and I really enjoyed the Elephant Military march stuff....but otherwise its just a mediocre film in the Disney Animation Pantheon. C |
