Bambi
Dir: David Hand Of course we all love Bambi. It is one of those kids movies that made us all cry. But other than that iconic villainous scene...Bambi doesn't quite elevate itself beyond "Cute" in comparison to the other Golden Age Disney Animated films. The animation still holds up today but the deeper themes and maturity that lend itself to the greats isn't really here. B DVD |

Casablanca
Dir: Michael Curtiz Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre, Claude Raines, Sydney Greenstreet 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die IMDB #37 I am thoroughly ashamed of myself that as a movie lover, it took me this long to see Casablanca. This movie is as spectacular a movie that I have ever seen. There is a certain Je ne sais quois with this film because it is not epic in scale and the leading man is a real jerk. I just LOVED this film, every second of it, and it is now one of my favorite films of all time. Yeah...I loved it that much. Listening to Bogart spout out all those lines, that I have heard time and time again, in an actual heartfelt context was thrilling. Casablanca is hands down, one of the finest movies EVER made!!!! The Palm Beach Story
Dir: Preston Sturgess Stars: Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Yep...I think I hate Preston Sturgess comedies. I was more than underwhelmed by The Lady Eve and now...The Palm Beach is even more nonsensical and silly. Soooo...it seems a wife is mad that a husband can't pay the rent. So she "leaves" him so she can swindle money away from a rich man to pay for his architectural dreams. Too bad the husband thinks it is real...and winds up chasing his wife down, only to become twisted up in the ruse with the rich man's Princess sister. I guess this all could have been charming...but there is no realistic emotion or even proper comedy that shines through. That train sequence with the millionaire clubs? My god....TEDIOUS. Looks like 1940s comedies are quite lacking. D+ |
