College
Dir: James W. Horne Stars: Buster Keaton As good as The General is, College is that mediocre. Keaton is a scholar now, and is frustrated that athletes get all the girls...so he follows some girl he has had little to no interaction with, to College, where he ignores his studies and goes out for all sorts of sports. The Keatonisms are limited to him failing at all sorts of Baseball and Track & Field hi-jinx...and it is pretty dull and boring. The climax is funny and clever...but this is very forgettable and disappointing...especially since I know what Buster Keaton is capable of. C- |
The General
Dir: Clyde Bruckman & Buster Keaton Stars: Buster Keaton 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die IMDB #154 I absolutely LOVED this film. It is movies like this that remind me of why I started this project in the first place. It is so clever, so exciting, and so well executed that even today, it rivals all other action comedies. Buster Keaton is a genius, and he plays the engineer on a Southern locomotive. When the Union spies steal it, he chases after them to retrive it, only to wind up behind enemy lines and thrust into being a hero. If you thought two trains chasing each other on one rail would get boring, think again. The things this movie comes up with just leaves a perpetual smile on your face. I enjoyed this movie so much in its whimsical simplicty, it is easily now one of my favorite films of all time!!! A+ |
Metropolis
Dir: Fritz Lang 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die IMDB #109 Simply incredible in its size and scope for a 1920s Sci-Fi film, but ultimately too random, overacted, and disjointed to be a REALLY good film. Most people rank this as one of the best Science Fiction films ever. Even though I agree it was trend-setting, the whole film is not much more than a labor dispute. The fact that a lot of the film was lost and the missing pieces are replaced by screens EXPLAINING what is going on really hurts the whole thing. C+ |
